Dear Mister O’Donovan,

I hope this letter finds you well in the bustling metropolis of New York City. Here in London, we are treated to daily showers and seldom see the sun. Your letter of March 2 reached me on the ninth. I confess, I was surprised that your sister had decided to leave Ireland for America. However, I can imagine that you will be happy to have some of your family there with you. That same week of your letter, I heard from my cousin, Father Hugh. He told me of a classmate of his in the seminary at Maynooth who is the pastor of St. Jerome’s Parish in Holyoke, Massachusetts, a mill town west of Boston, near Hartford. His name is Father Francis Dolan, a Kerryman, and Hugh assures me that he is a very sympathetic supporter of the cause of Irish freedom and independence. We both think Holyoke might be the perfect place for your sister and her husband to settle as there are plenty of jobs available on the railroad as well as the with the construction of dams along the river there. The woolen and silk mills employ women also. Holyoke is not too far from New York City by train, so you would not be very distant from your family.

Michael, I hope this information will be of help as you guide your family to a safe harbor after what must have been a most difficult voyage to a strange, new country, far from home. I remain as ever your friend and colleague in seeking a glorious freedom for Ireland,

Mary Grace O’Brien
